Ten Christian Teachings You Won't Find On A Watchblog

1. Love your enemies, and do good to those who hate you.

2. The measure with which you judge others will be the measure that is used to judge you.

3. Judgement without mercy will be shown to anyone who has not been merciful.

4. If anyone says "I love God", but hates his brother, he is a liar and walks in darkness.

5. If you do not forgive those who sin against you, you will not be forgiven.

6. Divine authority is given for building up, not tearing down.

7. True wisdom is considerate, full of mercy, impartial, and sincere.

8. Who are you to judge your neighbour? God is the only true judge.

9. Take the log out of your own eye so that you can see clearly to remove the speck from your brother's eye.

10. Slander no one, be peaceable and considerate, and show true humility before all men.

Great stuff – but what is a ‘watchblog’ please?

A watchblog is usually a Reformed Evangelical blog that seems to exist solely to point out the faults of others, criticise almost absolutely everyone, and make a lot of noise about “sound biblical doctrine” while ignoring almost all the biblical teaching about character, love, and proper behaviour.

For good examples of this pay a (short) visit to Slice of Laodicea, Emergent No, Fide-O, Triablogue, and also on occasion Team Pyro. You won’t like it, I assure you :)

A “watchblog” is what liberals call conservative blogs that shred them mercilessly and consider them sub-Christian, and what conservatives call liberal blogs that shred them mercilessly and consider them sub-Christian.

Sven,
I have to say that I haven’t found a whole lot of your criticism of watchbloggers that won’t apply to your behavior on your own blog. I’m reminded of your post on Christ and assurance in which you called some of those you disagree with snotty-nose evangelical upstarts, and discussed how seeing catholics dismantle their ideas brought you an analogous pleasure of a cat eating a mouse. Here’s the link for all those who might want to observe your contradiction: [[http://worldofsven.co.uk/theology/arch..]]

I think that there is a place for showing mercy and witholding judgment but there is also a time for pointing out error and defending truth. So its a cheap move to say that those who don’t roll over let someone’s doctrinal claims go unchallenged are being unloving, or in a word unchristian.

Man, I don’t see anything wrong with calling like it is when people are just being rude, especially when they’ve confused theological conviction with bigotry. And I think one of the big differences between “us” and “them” is that I never thought Truth needed me to defend Him…

thanks for the post…it’s certainly not something we see often and it’s a great reminder for all the critics inside us…Al.

Words to the wise
Sven has posted a list of ten Christian teachings that are sadly lacking in much online discourse. And what’s particularly interesting is that a Christianity without these characteristics seems curiously to be lacking Christ-like-ness.
